THREE VERSIONS OF THE LAST SERMON OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD

We are all familiar with the Prophet Muhammad’s LAST SERMON. I’m sure not many Muslims know that there is not ONE but there are THREE VERSIONS of THE LAST SERMON.

“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah , they would have found within it much ikh’tilāfan (contradictions).” 4/82

Now Allah gives us the key operative ==> ikh’tilāfan (contradictions) <== in Surah 4/82 by saying that if the Qur’an was not from Allah many ==> ikh’tilāfan (contradictions).

Now Prophet Muhammad was only ONE MAN, how can the AUDIENCE get it wrong by having three versions prior to his departure?

Now what is consistent is the Qur’an is mention in all THREE VERSIONS. Remember TRUTH is always CONSISTENT.

The FIRST VERSION

The Book of Allah and my Family:

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:

“I saw the Messenger of Allah during his Hajj, on the Day of ‘Arafah. He was upon his camel Qaswa, giving a Khutbah, so he said: ‘O people! Indeed, I have left among you, that which if you hold fast to it, you shall not go astray: The Book of Allah and my family, the people of my house.'”

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Jami` at-Tirmidhi

Vol. 1, Book 46, Hadith 3786

Narrated Zaid bin Arqam, may Allah be pleased with both of them:

that the Messenger of Allah said: “Indeed, I am leaving among you, that which if you hold fast to them, you shall not be misguided after me. One of them is greater than the other: The Book of Allah is a rope extended from the sky to the earth, and my family – the people of my house – and they shall not split until they meet at the Hawd, so look at how you deal with them after me.”

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

The SECOND VERSION

The Book of Allah and my Sunnah:

Yahya related to me from Malik that he heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I have left two matters with you. As long as you hold to them, you will not go the wrong way. They are the Book of Allah and the Sunna of His Prophet.”

Muwatta Malik

Book 46, Hadith 3

THE THIRD VERSION

The Book of Allah:

Third version, “I left for you what if you hold up to, you will never be misguided, the BOOK OF ALLAH.”

Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah.

I have left among you the Book of Allah, and if you hold fast to it, you would never go astray. And you would be asked about me (on the Day of Resurrection), (now tell me) what would you say? They (the audience) said: We will bear witness that you have conveyed (the message), discharged (the ministry of Prophethood) and given wise (sincere) counsel. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) then raised his forefinger towards the sky and pointing it at the people (said):” O Allah, be witness. 0 Allah, be witness,” saying it thrice.
