Prophet is called by the word “Nabi”, while Messenger is identified as “Rasool”.
The word “Nabi” comes from the Arabic word “Naba”, which means “News”. A Prophet is therefore one who has received “News from Allah”.
The word “Rasool” comes from the Arabic word “Rasala” which means Message. A Messenger is therefore one who conveys/delivers the Messages of Allah to the people.
Prophet is a Receiver of the Message and Messenger is the Deliverer of the Message.
So the Prophet (Nabi) means one who informs the people about the news of previous nations and Prophecies of the Future from the Messages of Allah (Risalat).
Therefore when a Messenger (Rasool) delivers the Messages (information, News and Prophecies) of Allah then he is also a Prophet (Nabi).
BOTH Messenger and Prophet are titles of one person and Both bring The book according to the Quran. 2:213, 57:25
- ALLAH SENT DOWN THE BOOK WITH PROPHETS
2:213 “The people used to be one nation, then Allah sent the *PROPHETS* as bearers of good news and warners, and ==>HE SENT DOWN WITH THEM THE BOOK<== with the truth so that they may judge between the people in what they were disputing…”
- ALLAH SENT DOWN THE BOOK WITH MESSENGERS
57:25 “We have sent Our *MESSENGERS* with clear proofs, and ==>WE SENT DOWN WITH THEM THE BOOK<== and the balance, so that the people may uphold justice…”
So It is not possible that a person claims to be a Messenger, but not a prophet from Allah. Similarly a person can not claim to be a Prophet, but not a Messenger from Allah.
Therefore it is clear like day light that messenger and prophet are two terms used interchangeably in Quran and two inseparable facets of one same person/thing.
Now If the messenger and Prophet are two different titles then why Allah has not repeat the word messenger in this verse?
4:69 And whoever obeys Allah and the messenger will be among those whom Allah has blessed from the prophets and the truthful and the martyrs and the upright. What an excellent companionship!
Why the messenger is missing from the 4 blessed categories mentioned in verse 4:69?
Does it mean the messengers will not be in jannah (Paradise)?
Another Similarity between Messenger and Prophet.
MESSENGERS AS BEARERS OF GOOD NEWS AND WARNERS
4:165 Messengers who were bearers of good news and warners, so that there will be no excuse for the people with Allah after the messengers. Allah is Noble, Wise.
PROPHETS AS BEARERS OF GOOD NEWS AND WARNERS
2:213 “The people used to be one nation, then Allah sent the prophets as bearers of good news and warners, and He sent down with them the Book…”
Prophethood (Nabuwwat) and Messengership (Risalat) was brought to an end with Prophet Muhammad.
- MUHAMMAD AS PROPHET
33:40 Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the MESSENGER (One who bring Messages) of Allah and the seal of the PROPHETS (One who tell future prophecies and news of previous nations). And Allah is fully aware of all things.
- MUHAMMAD AS MESSENGER
3:144 “Muhammad is but a =>MESSENGER<= many messengers have passed away before him…”
Think about this way the person in the picture is a Messenger and the Shadow of the person is a Prophet. So wherever this messenger will go the shadow will go along with him. When there is no light from God then no Shadow (Prophet) will appear with messenger. Therefore a messenger needs light and a shadow (Prophet).
