ASK THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN READING THE BOOK BEFORE

MISCONCEPTION

ASK THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN READING THE BOOK BEFORE MEANS WE HAVE TO ASK PEOPLE OF THE BOOK OR TO REFER THEIR BOOKS ?

There are people from the Muslims, Christians and Jews who think that the phrase “Ask those who have been reading the Book before” in verse 10:94 is commanding the Prophet Muhammad and believers to refer the Books of Torah & Injeel for guidance.

CLARIFICATION

In verse 10:94 Allah says to Prophet Muhammad =>if<= he is in doubt about what Allah has sent to him (The Quran) then ask those who have been reading the Book from before him (Jews & Christians).

Here is the verse:

10:94 If you are in doubt regarding what We have sent down to you, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before you. The truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be of those who doubt.

Now some people who read this verse may come to this conclusion that when Prophet had doubt about any verse or passage of the Quran then he was ordered by Allah to ask the Jews & Christians.

This is a wrong understanding of the verse 10:94.

The correct understanding is that the Prophet Muhammad was not in doubt about the Quran or his Prophethood/Messengership.

The presence of condition of “if” “ان” doesn’t mean that prophet surely have doubt of any kind. While in many other verses in the Quran we see that prophet have complete faith in his Prophethood/Messengership and in the words of Allah as well.

So the condition of “if” indicating that suppose if Prophet has any kind of doubt regarding his Prophethood/Messengership then he may confirm from the people who have been reading their books before him (i-e Jews & Christian) that either he is mentioned in their books or not.

According to the Quran the good news of the Prophet Muhammad is mentioned in Torah & Injeel.

7:157 “Those who follow the Gentile Messenger Prophet whom they find written for them in the Torah and the Injeel; he orders them to kindness, and prohibits them from vice, and he makes lawful for them the good things, and he makes unlawful for them the evil things, and he removes their burden and the shackles that are upon them. So those who believe in him, and support him, and help him persevere, and follow the light that was sent down with him; these are the successful ones.”

CONCLUSION

According to my understanding the verse 10:94 is about the confirmation of the Prophethood/Messengership in Previous books (Torah & Injeel). It is not saying/suggesting believers to ask people of the Book or to refer their books (Torah & Injeel).

  1. Thankyou for writing such a thoughtful post. In relation to 10:94. Personally I don’t really see anything wrong in having doubt? It would be completely normal for a man who was charged with such a monumental mission, to have some doubt, any human being would, when faced with great moral obligation and responsibility. In my understanding the āyatin in 7:157 (keeping in mind that, lisunnati (in (the) way) l-lahi (of) Allah, never changes: 35:43), is about the people of l-kitāba hiding biāyāti (the Signs of Allah); 2:101 ~ 2:77-79 ~ 3:187, and that l-qur’ānu would remove the shackles of bureaucracy that had been mandated and falsely claimed to be sanctioned by God. This was the crux of Muhammad’s mission, to enlighten people to the true path of guidance, and expel all the false doctrines claiming to be Divine, and remind us of rabbanā and good things to come.
