MISCONCEPTION

OBEY ALLAH AND OBEY THE MESSENGER IS REFERRING TO OBEY MAN MADE HADITH BOOKS ?

CLARIFICATION

Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger does not mean Obey Two Gods with different Books.

Also It does not mean

Obey Allah and obey Muhammad ?

Obey Allah and obey Hadiths and Sunnah ?

Obey Allah and obey Six Persian Imams ?

Yes “Obey the MESSENGER” But Allah didn’t say “Obey Muhammad”.

Why? Because

Message (The Quran) + Muhammad = Messenger.

Without Allah’s messages Messenger cannot exist.

Allah deliberately used the words “Obey the MESSENGER” because the duty of the Messenger is to deliver the Message of Allah.

5:67 O MESSENGER, deliver what was sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not then you have not delivered HIS MESSAGE; and Allah will protect you from the people. And Allah does not guide the rejecting people.

Therefore “Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger” means Obey the Messages of Allah sent to the messenger which are within the Quran.

Obedience is only for the MESSAGE received and delivered by the MESSENGER. No other book apart from the Quran is to be followed as divine guidance.

Obedience to Allah and his Messenger are not two separate obediences but one obedience.

Obey The Messenger = Obey The Message He Delivered = Obey The Laws He Followed = Obey The Quran

TO FOLLOW AND OBEY THE MESSENGER IS TO FOLLOW THE VERSES OF YOUR LORD

(Note: follow YOUR verses)

20:134 And if We had destroyed them with a retribution before this, they would have said: “Our Lord, if only You had sent us a MESSENGER so we could FOLLOW YOUR VERSES before we are humiliated and shamed!”

28:47 Thus, if any disaster strikes them as a consequence of their own deeds they cannot Say: “Our Lord, if only You sent a MESSENGER to us, so that we would FOLLOW YOUR VERSES, and we would be of the believers.”

COME TO WHAT ALLAH HAS SENT DOWN AND TO THE MESSENGER

4:60 Did you not note those who claimed they believed in what was sent down to you and what was sent before you? THEY WANTED TO SEEK JUDGMENT USING EVIL, while they were ordered to reject it. It is the devil who wants to lead them far astray.

4:61 And if they are told: Come to what Allah has sent down and to the messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you strongly.

5:67 O MESSENGER, deliver what was sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not then you have not delivered HIS MESSAGE; and Allah will protect you from the people. And Allah does not guide the rejecting people.

5:83 And if they hear what was SENT DOWN TO THE MESSENGER you see their eyes flooding with tears, for what they have known as the truth, they say: “Our Lord, we believe, so record us with the witnesses.”

5:104 And if they are told: “Come to what Allah has sent down, and TO THE MESSENGER;” they say: “We are content with what we found our fathers doing.” What if their fathers did not know anything nor were guided?

In Above verses “What Allah has sent AND to the messenger” is not referring to two different things but both referring to the Qur’an.

DOES OBEY THOSE IN AUTHORITY (ULIL AMR) MEANS OBEY THE HADITH AND SUNNAH OF ULIL AMR ?

[4:59] O you who believe, you shall OBEY ALLAH, and you shall OBEY THE MESSENGER, AND (OBEY) THOSE IN AUTHORITY AMONG YOU (Ulil Amr). If you dispute in any matter, you shall refer it to ALLAH and the MESSENGER, if you do believe in ALLAH and the Last Day. This is better for you, and provides you with the best solution.

If you read the verse carefully it is referring to two obediences.

1- Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger (The Quran)

2- Obey Ulil Amr (Those righteous Muslims that have been charged with authority or have the responsibility to maintain the affairs of a society)

And in case of disagreement follow the Quran.

Let’s suppose Obey the Messenger means Hadiths & Sunnah of the Messenger in verse 4:59 then

Does it mean

Obey Allah = Obey The Quran and

Obey Messenger = Hadiths & Sunnah of the Messenger and

Obey Ulil Amr = Hadiths & Sunnah of the Ulil Amr ???

No it simply Means

Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger = The Quran

Obey those in Authority among you = Obey Righteous people who are responsible for community affairs.

In case of disagreement we have to refer to the Quran.

REMEMBER ALSO THE EXPRESSION:

“He who ‘yuti’i’ (obeys) the Messenger, ‘aṭā’a’ (obeyed) Allah”

This is not a unique expression for the Prophet Muhammad, thus it is for all of the Prophets of Allah:

In Surah 26:108, Allah tells us to OBEY Prophet Noah, “So fear Allah, ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me)

Also in Surah 71:3, Noah said, “That ye should worship Allah, fear Him ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me)…”

Allah tells us to OBEY Prophet Hud in Surah  26:126 – “So fear Allah, ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me)…

Allah tells us to OBEY Prophet Saaleh in Surah 26:144  “fear Allah, ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me) and in Surah 26:150 “fear Allah, ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me)”

Allah tells us to OBEY Prophet LOT in Surah 26:163 “ You shall fear Allah ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’(and obey me).”

Allah tells us to OBEY Prophet Shu’aib in Surah 26:179 – “fear Allah ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me)

Allah tells us to OBEY Prophet Jesus in Surah 43:63 “When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said:

“Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah ‘wa-aṭī’ūni’ (and obey me).

Now compare what the Prophet Muhammad was instructed to say:

“And ‘wa-aṭī’ū (obey) Allah and ‘wa-aṭī’ū’ (obey) the messenger and be cautious; but if you turn back, then know that the sole duty of the messenger is the deliverance (of the message)” Surah 5:92

“And ‘wa-aṭī’ū’ (obey) Allah ‘wa-aṭī’ū’ (and obey) the messenger, but if you turn back, then upon Our messenger is the sole duty of the clear delivery (of the message)” 64:12

“Whoever ‘yuṭi’i (obeys) Allah and his Messenger will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow to live there (forever), and that will be the great achievement” (Surah An-Nisa 4:13)

In Surah 3:132 “ ‘wa-aṭī’ū’ (and obey) Allah and the Messenger; that ye may obtain mercy.”

In Surah 47:33 Allah says, “O ye who believe!  ‘wa-aṭī’ū’ (obey) Allah and ‘wa-aṭī’ū’ (obey) the Messenger, and make not vain your deeds!”

If you research the word Messenger, is derived from the word Message. The duty of a Messenger is to deliver a Message. Now if there was no message there would be no messenger. Hence, to Obey the Messenger would thus mean to obey the message he is delivering.
