2:154 And do not say of those who are killed in the cause of Allah that they are dead; no, they are alive but you do not perceive.

This verse 2:154 is a response to those who think that the believers who fought in the battles died in vain and did not enjoy the life of this world!

Allah revealed this verse to comfort the believers and to tell them the honor those fighters received in the realm of His Presence. Allah declares that these fighters are honored and are alive in His Presence, but the people of the world cannot perceive that reality. Such is the honor Allah bestows on those who are slain in His Cause. Allah demands that their death in the life of this world should not, and cannot be compared to the people who die a normal or natural death.

Thus, Allah has declared honor and admiration to those who are killed for Allah’s Cause, and affirmed that the dying of one in the Cause of Allah cannot be compared to a normal death of this life! The very word dead as understood by human beings is very discouraging, and kills the spirit of self-sacrifice, and the urge to fight in the Way of Allah. Instead of this, the believers are encouraged to believe that the fighters are alive in the Presence of Allah, but we are not able to perceive that honorable life of theirs. And this is a reality which revitalizes and keeps the spirit of courage and jihad alive in the hearts of the true believers.

Allah reveals a similar verse 3:168 and describes the honor and bliss the martyrs are enjoying in the Presence of their Merciful Lord, where they are provided with abundant sustenance and bounty. The verses are meant to impress upon the people of this life, that those who are slain in the Way of Allah, have bartered their transitory worldly life for an eternal and everlasting life of joy, bliss, Grace and Mercy, and where they have absolutely no fear, and no cause to grieve.

Allah says in the Quran:

3:168 Those who remained and said to their brothers: “If they obeyed us they would not have been killed.” Say: “Then avert death away from yourselves if you are truthful!”

3:169 And do not think that those who are killed in the cause of Allah are dead. No, they are alive at their Lord receiving a bounty.

3:170 Happy with what Allah has granted them from His grace, and they rejoice in those who have yet to follow after them. There is no fear upon them nor do they grieve.

3:171 They rejoice with the bounty of Allah and grace; Allah will not waste the recompense of the believers.

Some ignorant people who invent their beliefs from the guidance of the Quran, try to make the Quran follow their self-satisfying beliefs! They choose a particular martyr(s) or saint from a particular family of their choice, and then use these verses to justify that these martyrs or auliyaas (Saints) are alive, are very close to Allah, and thus can hear and answer their prayers! They thus celebrate the praises of their specifically chosen martyrs and auliyaas (Saints), celebrate and perform certain rituals on their birth and death days, make shrines and tombs over their graves, and make their shrines a place of their rituals and worship. They do all these rituals so that their specifically chosen martyr and auliyaas (Saints) becomes pleased with their service, and since they have so much influence on Allah, he will get their prayers answered by Allah!

Thus in effect, these ignorant people involve themselves in the abomination and the most heinous of sins in the sight of Allah, which is Shirk! They believe that the specific martyr and auliyaa (Saint) they are serving is All-Knowing and knows the rituals and service they do in his name and on his grave; they believe that their specific martyr and auliyaa (Saint) is All-Seeing and can see their state and their worship; and they believe that their specific martyr and auliyaa is All-Hearing and can hear and respond to their invocations!

These ignorant people have dared to share the Exclusive Attributes of the All-Knowing, All-Seeing, All-Hearing Lord with one of Allah’s creation, and have thus involved themselves in the heinous crime of shirk! And to top it all, they use the verse 2:154 completely out of context to justify their worship of their chosen martyrs and auliyaas, and disregard the rest of the Guidance and Commands of the Quran! The absolute Truth of the matter is that they want the Quran to conform to their false beliefs; rather than form their beliefs with the clear Guidance and Teachings of the Quran!

Allah says in the Quran

18:102 Did those who reject think that they could take My servants as allies (auliyaas) besides Me? We have prepared Hell for the rejecters as a dwelling.

Allah says in the Quran

39:2-3 We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, so serve Allah while devoting the system to Him. Absolutely, to Allah is the true system. And those who set up allies (auliyas) besides Him: “We only serve them so that they may bring us closer to Allah.” Allah will judge between them in what they dispute. For Allah does not guide him who is a liar, a rejecter.

Allah says in the Quran

10:18 And they serve besides Allah what does not harm them or benefit them, and they say: “These are our intercessors (Shufaa) with Allah.” (O Muhammad) Say: “Are you informing Allah of what He does not know in the heavens or the earth?” Be He glorified and exalted above what they set up.

Allah says in the Quran

10:28-30 And on the Day We gather them all, then We will say to those who were polytheists: “Stop where you are, you and your partners,” then We will separate between them, and their partners will say: “It was not us that you served!”. “Allah is enough as a witness between us and you, that we were unaware of you serving us.” It is then that every soul will know what it has done, and they will be returned to Allah their true patron, and they have been abandoned by that which they had invented.

Allah says in the Quran

25:17-19 And on the Day when We gather them together with what they served besides Allah; then He will say: “Did you misguide My servants here, or did they stray from the path?” They said: “Glory be to You, it was not for us to take besides You any allies; indeed You gave them and their fathers luxury until they forgot the remembrance, and they were a lost people.” They have refuted what you claimed, so you will not find any excuse nor any victor. And whoever has done wrong among you, We will let him taste a great retribution.

Allah says in the Quran

19:81-82 And they have taken gods besides Allah to be for them their glory. On the contrary, they will reject their service of them and they will be standing against them.

Allah says in the Quran

46:4-6 Say: “Do you see those that you call on besides Allah? Show me what they have created on the earth, or do they have a share in the heavens? Bring me a book before this, or any trace of knowledge, if you are truthful.” And who is more astray than he who calls on others besides Allah that do not respond to him even until the Day of Resurrection? And they are totally unaware of the calls to them! And at the time when the people are gathered, they will be enemies for them, and they will reject their worship.

Read the above verse of the Quran carefully and decide for yourself if the invoking and serving of the specific chosen martyrs or auliyaas at their graves is the abomination of shirk or not! For shirk is the one sin that Allah has Himself declared that He shall never forgive the one who dies in that state, and Hell shall be the everlasting abode of those who die in the state of shirk!

Allah says in the Quran

5:72 “…Whoever sets up partners with Allah, then Allah will restrict the Paradise from him, and his destiny will be the Fire; and the wicked will have no supporters.”

Allah says in the Quran

4:48 Allah does not forgive that partners be set up with Him, and He forgives other than that for whom He pleases. Whoever sets up partners with Allah has indeed invented a great sin.

Allah says in the Quran

39:65-66 And He has inspired to you and to those before you, that if you set up partners, He will nullify all your works, and you will be of the losers. Therefore, you shall serve Allah, and be among the thankful.
